Looking for fun beach activities for toddlers and preschoolers? Then you should try this super easy “painting the beach” activity that my kids absolutely loved.

We’re Floridians so we’re lucky to have easy beach access. I was looking for a way to mix it up on our latest beach trip and my toddlers are deeply into art right now so I wanted to bring the two together.

It’s super easy to prep this one, all you need is some food coloring and squirt bottles (this is a great use for old peri bottles too).

This activity occupied by kids for 30 minutes, which is saying something for a 3-year old. And they would have kept going if I had thought to bring the food dye with me to refill them.

Let’s paint the beach!

Steps to making beach “paint”

1. Find a squirt bottle that works for little kid hands. You want a bottle that releases streams of water, not a mist spray. You could also try a squirt gun for older kids.

2. Mix drops of food coloring into the bottle until you reach a deep color. You want the liquid dark so that it shows better on the sand.

NOTE: Make sure to use food-safe dyes since it’ll be mixed into the beach environment in the sand and water.

3. Shake the mixture until the dye is completely dissolved into the water.

4. Head to the beach and get painting!

5. Make up more patches using ocean water if your kids run out!

My kids painted both the sand and also had fun adding the paint into the water to see how it dissipated in the waves.
